Indigenes of Ifon Orolu community in Osun State took to the streets on Tuesday in a peaceful protest, expressing their discontent over alleged plans by the Nigerian Army to utilize their land for a project without seeking their input or consent. Led by Chief Babatunde Oyetunji, the Eesa of Ifon, the protesters gathered to voice their concerns and objections to what they perceived as unilateral actions by the military on their territory.

The protesters brandished placards bearing inscriptions that conveyed their message loud and clear. Phrases like ‘Lagbaja don’t cause crises in Orolu/Irepodun community,’ ‘Nigerian Army is for the whole nation, not for a community,’ ‘Federal Government should caution Lagbaja,’ and ‘Tinubu call Lagbaja to order’ adorned the banners they held aloft. These inscriptions underscored their stance – they weren’t against development projects in the area, but they demanded the right to have a say in decisions affecting their land and community.

Chief Oyetunji, speaking on behalf of the protesters, urged the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, who hails from Ilobu, to ensure that any project undertaken in the region doesn’t become a catalyst for conflicts. He stressed the importance of community involvement and avoiding any actions that could potentially lead to crises.

Oyetunji further remarked, “Available information further revealed that the proposed facility will be built on Orolu land with a possible ulterior motive of naming it as belonging to the Ilobu community.” He urged the intervention of both the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), and the Chief of Army Staff to prevent the situation from escalating into a communal clash, which could result in the loss of lives and properties.

The history of clashes between the two communities, Ifon Orolu and Ilobu, adds to the urgency of avoiding any actions that could exacerbate tensions. Considering the ongoing tension, the Secretary of Ifon Orolu Development Board, Prince Jide Akinyooye, called upon Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, and President Bola Tinubu to step in immediately and defuse the building tension over the proposed project.

As the community members seek a peaceful resolution and respectful consideration of their concerns, their protest highlights the importance of transparent communication and inclusivity in matters that impact local territories and livelihoods.
