Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to make his second wartime visit to Washington next week, as announced by the White House. This visit aims to strengthen the support of Ukraine’s crucial backer, the United States, which has provided substantial aid in the fight against Russian invaders.
Zelensky’s itinerary includes a visit to the White House for talks with President Joe Biden and meetings at the US Congress. The Republican Party, which has some reservations about Biden’s proposed aid package for Ukraine, will also be part of the discussions.
Zelensky’s trip to Washington follows his meetings with world leaders at the UN General Assembly in New York. Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security advisor, highlighted the critical timing of this visit as Ukraine continues its counteroffensive against Russia.
During the visit, Biden is expected to reaffirm the US commitment to support Ukraine in defending its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. This support is especially crucial amid concerns about the future of US assistance as Congress approaches a September 30 funding deadline.
While former President Donald Trump has criticized US assistance to Ukraine, some traditional Republicans, including Senator Mitch McConnell, support aid to the country. The Biden administration believes there will be bipartisan support for continued assistance to Ukraine.
The United States has already provided $43 billion in security assistance to Ukraine, and Biden has requested an additional $40 billion in emergency defense aid and economic and humanitarian assistance.
This visit will be Zelensky’s second to Washington since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Zelensky has become more confident in traveling abroad and has met with leaders from various countries.
Biden, too, visited Kyiv in February, making a surprise trip to the conflict zone. Campaign advertisements featuring Biden’s visit are now airing as he seeks to dispel criticism regarding his age and ability to lead.
