A former president of Malawi, Dr Joyce Banda, asserts that sustainable development in Nigeria and across Africa requires a radical change in leadership.
She makes this statement during the 12th Annual Zik lecture, held at the Secretariat Complex of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.
The event honors Nigeria’s first President, the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe.
Banda, delivering a keynote address, identifies leadership as the greatest problem facing African countries, emphasizing the need to imbibe the virtues of the late Azikiwe for sustainable growth.
She calls on Africans to unite against poor, insensitive, and corrupt leaders who hinder the continent’s development.
Banda points out that African leaders are often involved in organized crimes and looting, urging Africans to take responsibility and find solutions.
In addition, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who chaired the event, advocates for a complete restructuring of Nigeria for progress.
He acknowledges Azikiwe’s role in preserving Nigeria’s unity over 60 years, emphasizing the need for restructuring to propel the nation forward. Makinde echoes Banda’s call for transformative leadership and recognizes the late Azikiwe’s dedication to Nigeria’s unity.
