The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, revealed on Thursday that discussions were underway for the exploration of oil in Tongeji Island and Olokola in Ipokia and Ogun Waterside local government areas of the state.
The governor emphasized that the state was on the verge of being granted frontier status, thereby joining the league of oil-producing states in the country.
This announcement took place during the presentation of the 2024 Appropriation Bill, named ‘Budget of Sustained Growth and Development,’ at the Ogun State House of Assembly.
Governor Abiodun expressed confidence in the ongoing discussions, stating, “We are confident that very soon, we will be given frontier status and will soon join the league of oil-producing states.”
In preparation for this new status, the governor’s administration had established the Ministry of Mineral Resources.
This ministry would oversee the general administration and operation of the natural resources in the state.
Additionally, the Ministry of Energy was established to leverage the constitutional amendment allowing sub-national governments to participate in the energy sector.
Governor Abiodun also disclosed plans for an education summit in the first quarter of 2024. He highlighted the summit’s focus on addressing numerous challenges facing the education sector with the aim of repositioning education in the state.
