President Bola Tinubu, Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, emphasized the importance of good governance in preventing authoritarian takeovers and unconstitutional changes of government during the 64th ordinary session in Abuja.
Tinubu stressed that prioritizing good governance is crucial for achieving socio-economic transformation and maintaining stability in West Africa.
He highlighted that addressing issues such as poverty and inequality is fundamental to curbing military interventions in the region’s civilian processes.
Commending President George Weah of Liberia for his commitment to democratic ideals, Tinubu called for collective support to countries under military rule, advocating for realistic and short transition plans to ensure the smooth transition to democracy.
Rejecting the distraction posed by the ‘Alliance of Sahel States,’ Tinubu emphasized ECOWAS’ unwavering commitment to integration and its achievements for the betterment of the community.
He noted the need for a relentless focus on qualitative service delivery and good governance despite the challenges faced in the region.
Addressing recent disturbances in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau, Tinubu urged fellow leaders to stand strong in protecting democracy.
He reiterated ECOWAS’ zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government and pledged unwavering support for democratically elected leaders, emphasizing that democracy will prevail with collective efforts.
