Lagos State Delays Third Mainland Bridge Palliative Works

The Lagos State Government has postponed the planned palliative works on the Third Mainland Bridge owing to the heavy downpour experienced in the state at the weekend.

The government through its Public Works Corporation and in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, had announced that palliative works would be carried out on the failed sections of the Third Mainland Bridge on two consecutive Sundays, September 17 and 24, 2023, between 7.00 am to 7.00 pm on each Sunday.

A statement on Friday by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola, said the proposed works would be strictly executed in two phases with phase one focusing only on the most critical sections of the Iyana Oworonshoki inward Adeniji Adele/Lagos Island.

He explained that the palliative works were scheduled for Sundays to minimise inconveniences for motorists, adding that alternative routes for use during the rehabilitation have been mapped out.

However, a statement late Saturday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the rain had affected the preliminaries of the planned palliative works on the asphalt pavement of the bridge.

“Assuring that a later date, which will be subject to weather conditions, will be duly communicated for the palliative works, the Transport Commissioner urged Motorists to continue to access the bridge with observance of safety measures,” the statement added.
