The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced the Federal Government’s commitment to investing in the harmonization of the country’s data through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). This move aims to address the issue of multiple ID registrations, ultimately streamlining and simplifying identity verification processes for Nigerian citizens.

During a meeting held in Abuja on Monday, Minister Tunji-Ojo welcomed the MTN management team, led by Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola. In his address, he stressed the necessity of establishing a technology-driven data hub under the Ministry of Interior to centralize identity information and enhance data management.

Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the significance of data harmonization, stating, “The integrity of our travel document must be restored through the harmonization of our data. This way, our people do not have to repeat data capture processes during the passport enrolment phase when they have a valid NIN.”

He further elaborated on the benefits of data harmonization, highlighting its potential to facilitate data exchange among government agencies. With this approach, individuals could use their National Identification Number (NIN) as a reference point for various services such as passport applications and Bank Verification Number (BVN) registration. This streamlining of processes would eliminate the need for redundant data capture.

In essence, Minister Tunji-Ojo’s vision is to create a more efficient and user-friendly system that leverages centralized data management to enhance government services and reduce the burden on citizens when it comes to identity verification and documentation.
