Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba, is urging the judiciary to take a stand against domestic and sexual violence within the state. He made this call during a special event held at the Lagos State High Court Osborne, where judges and magistrates of Family Courts and Domestic and Sexual Offences Courts were adorned with purple ribbons.

This event was organized to commemorate the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

Justice Alogba emphasized the critical role of judges and magistrates in becoming champions of the fight against domestic and sexual violence. He expressed his strong belief that such crimes deeply impact society, noting that when a person is subjected to abuse, the scars can linger, affecting not only the victims but also future generations.

He stressed the need for a relentless effort to combat this menace, not only in official capacities but also by encouraging people to report abuse and speak out against it.

In his words, Justice Alogba said, “That is a reason we must not relent in our efforts to fight against this menace, not only in our official capacities but where we see something, please say something and encourage anyone experiencing abuse in any form to speak out because these crimes thrive in the cover, which we give it in the name of cultural habits.”

Justice Alogba further highlighted the importance of reporting perpetrators and ensuring they face prosecution and legal consequences, emphasizing that this is essential in eradicating the scourge of domestic and sexual violence.

Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the Executive Secretary of DSVA (Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team), expressed gratitude to the judges and magistrates for participating in the event and wearing purple ribbons, which symbolize awareness of domestic violence.

She recognized the pioneering role of the Lagos State judiciary as the first in Nigeria to designate specialized courts for the adjudication of Domestic and Sexual Violence Offences.

This initiative is part of Lagos State’s commitment to addressing these serious issues and providing support for victims while holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
