The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have instructed Oyo State workers to assemble at the NLC Secretariat in Ibadan.

This directive follows the expiration of an ultimatum served on the state government, demanding improvements in welfare and entitlements post the removal of petrol subsidies.

In a joint statement by NLC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Martins, and TUC counterpart, Bosun Olabiyi, the labour centres condemned the recent attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Imo State.

The statement characterized the incident as an affront to the fundamental rights of the Nigerian labour force and a display of tyrannical tendencies by some state governments towards the labour movement.

Expressing concern for the principles of social justice and workers’ rights being disregarded in some quarters, the labour centres asserted that the labour movement is a vital pillar of democracy and should operate without fear of harassment or intimidation.

The statement outlined the plan for Oyo State workers to gather at the NLC Secretariat in Agodi Gate, Ibadan, for what is described as the largest congress in the state’s history.

Workers are directed to remove personal belongings from offices on Friday, November 3, 2023.

Additionally, pensioners are expected to join the congress on Monday, November 6, 2023, for further directives on workers’ rights and social justice.

The NLC and TUC emphasized their commitment to defending the rights and welfare of workers in Oyo State and called on the labour community, civil society organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to condemn the attack on the NLC President and demand justice.

The statement stressed that constructive negotiations leading to agreements and implementation are essential for good governance.
