Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Spotify has recognized Nigerian artist Olamide, aka “Baddo,” as the ‘most influential street pop artist of his generation.’

This acknowledgment comes amidst the rising prominence of the sub-genre “Street Pop” in Nigeria, making its way into mainstream music. Olamide’s impact in elevating Street Pop to mainstream recognition is lauded, starting from his debut hit “Eni Duro” to popularizing dance styles like “Shakiti Bobo” and introducing street lingos such as “Baddo Sneh” and “Pepper Dem.”

Through his record label YBNL, Olamide has played a pivotal role in discovering and nurturing talents within the Street Pop genre. Street Pop, born from a fusion of Afrobeats, Highlife, Hip-hop, Fuji, Apala, indigenous sounds, and contemporary elements, boasts an engaging rhythm, pulsating fast-paced beats, and lyrics reflecting the everyday lives of Nigerians navigating street challenges.

Spotify’s Benewaah Boateng emphasized that Street Pop’s connection to the harsh realities of Nigerian life is a notable attribute of the genre. Olamide, securing the ninth spot among Nigeria’s top 10 artists, received acclaim for his recent project “Unruly,” with the track “Gaza” standing out for its appeal and musical craftsmanship.

Seyi Vibez, a rising force in the Nigerian street pop scene, gained recognition in 2023, marked by a sold-out concert at the O2 Indigo Hall in the UK and features on hit songs like “Gwagwalada,” the second most streamed song in Nigeria on Spotify.

Additionally, Boateng highlighted Zinoleesky’s contributions to reshaping the street pop genre through skillful melodies and compelling storytelling, earning him a spot among the top 15 most streamed artists in Nigeria.

As the genre continues to evolve, street pop artists explore new creative frontiers, positioning it for exponential growth in the future, potentially emerging as the next global phenomenon akin to Afrobeats.
