Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, aged 67, has succumbed to a prolonged health battle, as confirmed by a top government source.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), former NBA president, and ex-Attorney General of Ondo State, Akeredolu was in his second term as governor before his demise.
The governor had undergone medical treatment abroad, returning in September after months overseas.
However, his health worsened, leading to calls for resignation or the transfer of power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Governor Akeredolu eventually transmitted power to Aiyedatiwa in early December during another medical leave, the second in 2023.
Akeredolu, born in 1956, was a notable figure, serving as an outspoken lawyer and politician.
His diverse career included leadership roles in student activism during his university days, legal practice, and significant contributions to social service.
A committed Christian, Akeredolu is survived by his wife, Betty, four children, and numerous grandchildren.
His passing marks the end of an era for Ondo State, and his legacy will be remembered across various spheres of public service.
