In a statement on Wednesday, Com. Akeem Ayo Babalola, the JDS Tinubu Seyi Ambassador (Oluyole LG Coordinator) and Oyo State Coordinator of APC Patriotic Vanguards, formerly known as APC Aspirants Forum, expressed concern over what he described as the declining relevance and influence of the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) under Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.
According to him, the growing perception that BCOS has lost much of its former prominence, particularly in comparison with private broadcasting stations such as Fresh FM, raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to preserving and strengthening the state’s public broadcasting institution.
He noted that BCOS is not merely a broadcasting station but a historic institution that has played an important role in informing the public, promoting Yoruba culture, and preserving Oyo State’s broadcasting heritage. He argued that an institution of such historical significance deserves adequate investment, strategic leadership, and policies capable of restoring its relevance in the modern media landscape.
The concerns have become more pronounced following questions about the corporation’s prominence in the state’s media space, including whether it remains sufficiently influential to serve as a major platform for government communication and public engagement.
Rather than allowing a historic public institution to struggle for relevance, the state government should demonstrate its commitment to strengthening BCOS through improved infrastructure, professional development, quality programming, and sustainable funding.Com.
Babalola maintained that the condition of BCOS should concern every well-meaning citizen of Oyo State, regardless of political affiliation, because the preservation of public institutions and cultural heritage should transcend partisan interests.
He therefore called on Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to explain the measures being taken to restore BCOS to its former standing and ensure that the corporation can compete effectively with private broadcasters while fulfilling its public-service responsibilities.
He further urged the people of Oyo State to demand accountability and support leadership that prioritises institutional development, cultural preservation, and the long-term interests of the state.Oyo State deserves a broadcasting institution that commands respect, serves the people, and proudly preserves its heritage.
BCOS must not be allowed to fade into irrelevance while its rich history becomes a memory.
