El-Rufai Cautions ECOWAS on Military Intervention in Niger, Urges Diplomacy
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has issued a cautious note to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), advising against a military intervention in Niger Republic. This comes after ECOWAS defence chiefs pledged their readiness to deploy a standby force aimed at restoring democracy in the wake of a coup that led to the toppling and detention of President Mohamed Bazoum.

El-Rufai conveyed his thoughts via X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, drawing a poignant analogy to the 1970s rock classic ‘Brothers in Arms’ by Dire Straits. He emphasized the gravity of a conflict within the subregion, likening it to a war between brothers. He underlined the shared identity of the people of Niger Republic and those living in Northern Nigeria. El-Rufai urged a concerted effort to avert a potential civil war among brethren, advocating for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution.

In a parallel sentiment, the Nigerian Guild of Editors echoed the call for restraint. They urged President Bola Tinubu to adopt a diplomatic approach in addressing the coup in Niger Republic. The Guild emphasized that military intervention is increasingly considered an aberration on the global stage. This aligns with the prevailing international perspective that values diplomatic solutions and seeks to prevent conflicts that can have far-reaching ramifications.

As tensions mount and the region assesses its response, the words of caution from El-Rufai and the Nigerian Guild of Editors serve as a reminder of the vital importance of pursuing peaceful means to address complex geopolitical situations.”
