Detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, asserts he won’t plead for release after Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court cleared him. Kanu’s lead counsel, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, revealed this in a letter dated August 25, 2023. The letter highlights Kanu’s refusal to beg for freedom, considering the Court of Appeal’s prior discharge verdict. Ozekhome had expressed concern over Kanu’s detention conditions and requested a magistrate’s inspection of the facility.

Kanu strongly feels that begging for release would disrespect the memory of late Pa Mbazulike Amaechi, whose appeals to the Federal Government went unanswered. The Court of Appeal’s judgment stands firm in his case. Kanu’s legal team visited him to discuss his welfare and medical records, particularly after the State Security Service didn’t provide medical records as directed by the court. A contempt proceeding against the SSS was initiated due to this disregard for a court order.

The next step for Kanu is awaiting the Supreme Court’s appeal hearing, where his legal team looks forward to an expeditious process. He emphasizes his commitment to his stance and expresses gratitude for the support from people of goodwill advocating for his release.
