The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has announced the formation of a special committee tasked with a comprehensive review of firearms licensing and regulations within the Nigeria Police Force. This initiative aligns with the Firearms Act and existing laws, prioritizing public safety and overall security.

The committee’s mandate includes a thorough assessment of current firearms licensing procedures and regulations to improve their effectiveness, transparency, and accountability. The police will collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including legal experts, civil society organizations, and field specialists, to ensure a well-informed and holistic review.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made this announcement in an official statement. Furthermore, the Inspector-General of Police has issued a stern warning against the illegal possession of arms and light weapons, emphasizing the significant threat they pose to national peace and stability.

The Nigeria Police Force is committed to combating the illegal manufacturing, sale, possession, and use of firearms, reinforcing that owning firearms without the appropriate licenses and permits not only violates the law but also endangers society. The police will vigorously pursue and prosecute individuals engaged in these unlawful activities.

The Inspector-General has instructed state Commissioners of Police and supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of Zonal Commands and tactical squads to launch a concerted effort to curb the illegal production, sale, possession, and use of prohibited firearms nationwide. Additionally, all Nigerians are encouraged to report suspicious firearm-related activities to their local police divisions or through the NPF’s social media platforms for swift responses.
