The Senate has called on President Bola Tinubu to implement recommendations from the Presidential Committee for a Comprehensive Plan of Action against Flooding.

The committee’s key suggestion is the establishment of a National Flood Management Council in Nigeria.

Expressing sympathy for flood victims, the Senate commended the crisis management efforts of Lagos and Ogun states. Additionally, it directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to affected communities in both states.

Moreover, the Senate urged the Federal Government to organize a stakeholders’ meeting to address the recurrent issue of floods across the country, aiming to find a lasting solution.

It also instructed relevant Senate committees to allocate adequate funding for NIMET, the Hydrological Agency of Nigeria, and the River Basin Development Authorities, empowering them to effectively fulfill their responsibilities.

The motion, led by Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by communities near coastlines, specifically Ikosi-Isheri and Agboyi-Ketu in Lagos State, and other areas in Ogun State when the Oyan River Dams are opened.

The motion drew attention to the recent havoc caused by the release of water from the Oyan River Dam, emphasizing the impact on residents’ property and livelihoods.

Notably, it mentioned the extensive flooding on October 24, 2023, affecting communities and leading to the closure of schools, businesses, and religious centers.

The Senate’s resolution aligns with the adoption of Senator Abiru’s motion and emphasizes the need for coordinated efforts, with a proposed National Flood Management Council serving as a central body for nationwide flood management activities.
