Femi Falana: Judiciary Shouldn’t Determine Election Winners, Advocates INEC’s Sole Role

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has criticized the Supreme Court’s involvement in determining election winners, emphasizing this as the responsibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Despite the conclusion of the presidential election case, Falana expressed concern about the judiciary’s role in electoral contests.

He underscored the imperative for Nigeria to enhance its electoral processes, urging an end to the judiciary’s involvement in deciding election outcomes.

Falana highlighted the need for transparent elections and emphasized that the responsibility falls on INEC if procedures are followed correctly.

Falana urged Nigeria, being home to the largest concentration of black people globally, to uphold greater responsibility in ensuring transparent elections.

He emphasized that the political class needs honesty and dedication to conduct credible elections efficiently.

The Supreme Court recently upheld President Bola Tinubu’s election, dismissing appeals by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

A seven-judge panel ruled that the opposition appeals lacked merit, covering claims of fraud, electoral law violations, and Tinubu’s eligibility to run for President.
