Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala has secured a record-extending sixth African Women’s Player of the Year award at the 2023 CAF ceremony in Marrakech. The Barcelona star, dominant in women’s football, surpasses competitors Thembi Kgatlana and Barbara Banda.
Oshoala, who previously received the prize in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022, expressed her gratitude in the acceptance speech. She thanked everyone involved in her football journey, from grassroots to the national level and club side. The win solidifies her status as a powerhouse in African women’s football.
In her address, Oshoala emphasized the collaborative nature of football, urging African federations to work together for continental success. She highlighted the potential for African teams to make history, drawing inspiration from the men’s World Cup where African teams created a significant impact.
The Barcelona star’s achievements from the previous season, including winning the treble and being the joint-top scorer in the league, contribute to her historic recognition. She also played a pivotal role as Nigeria reached the World Cup round of 16 in New Zealand and Australia.
Oshoala’s remarkable feat extends to being the first to win the award six times, and she was also nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or prize. The recognition further solidifies her position as one of the most accomplished figures in African women’s football.
On the same night, her compatriot Victor Osimhen received the CAF Men’s Player of the Year, and teammate Chiamaka Nnadozie was honored with the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, adding to Nigeria’s success at the ceremony.
