In Lagos, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made a significant arrest, detaining a 75-year-old grandmother, Sekinat Soremekun, for her involvement in illicit drug trade.
The arrest, which occurred in Oshodi on Friday, revealed the possession of quantities of cannabis and codeine syrup.
The elderly suspect explained that her son, Segun, who is currently evading arrest, supplied her with the illegal substances for retail.
According to Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for NDLEA, the agency also achieved the forfeiture of a multi-million-naira mansion in Victoria Garden City, Lekki. This mansion had been used as a clandestine laboratory for the production of methamphetamine.
The property belonged to a convicted drug baron, Okenwa Chris Nzewi. Following Nzewi’s arrest, guilty plea, and subsequent legal proceedings, the court ruled for the forfeiture of the property to the Federal Government.
The objective behind this legal action was to prevent Nzewi from enjoying the proceeds of his criminal activities.
These developments underscore the NDLEA’s commitment to tackling drug-related offenses and dismantling illicit operations, even reaching into unexpected quarters, such as the involvement of a 75-year-old woman in drug trade.
