Mogajis Combat Improper Local Government Certificates in Ibadan
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Traditional rulers, family heads (Mogajis), Baales, and the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) have joined forces to address the improper issuance of Local Government Identification Certificates to non-indigenes of Ibadan land.

The decision was reached during a meeting held at Ibadan House, Oke-Aremo, Ibadan, on Thursday.

A statement jointly signed after the meeting by the President of the Ibadan Mogajis Association, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, and the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade, outlined the resolution.

According to the statement, the process of issuing Local Government Identification Certificates in all the 11 local governments across Ibadan land must now include a signature from either a Mogaji, Baale, Traditional Ruler, and the approval of the Olubadan before any local government official can issue such a certificate.

This measure is aimed at preventing non-indigenes from obtaining Local Government Identification Certificates at the expense of original Ibadan sons and daughters.

The statement alleges that some local government officials in Ibadan land have turned the issuance of these certificates into a profit-driven venture, often issuing them to non-indigenes without confirming their indigeneship.

“We want to stop some unscrupulous people at the local governments perpetrating this evil,” the statement emphasized. At the meeting were representatives of family heads (Mogajis) in Ibadan land, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, President-General of CCII, Chief Niyi Ajewole, representative of Ibadan Baales, Baale F.B Ige, representatives of monarchs and traditional rulers, and Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative, Mogaji Nurudeen Akinade, among others.
