Senate Summons Service Chiefs as Insecurity Surges

The Senate has unanimously summoned service chiefs in response to the escalating insecurity in the country.

This decision came after an emergency session held on the first legislative day of the year, prompted by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele’s motion on the security situation.

During the two-hour closed-door session, lawmakers discussed the pressing issues, and upon reconvening, they resolved to invite the service chiefs next week to address the spate of insecurity in the country.

The service chiefs include General Christopher Musa (Chief of Defence Staff), Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja (Chief of Army Staff), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar (Chief of Air Staff), and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla (Chief of Naval Staff).

Amidst rising incidents of kidnappings and killings across the country, the latest being the tragic murder of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State, concerns over national security have intensified.

The Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti, Oba David Ogunsola, were killed during their return from a meeting in Irele-Ekiti on Monday.

In response to the challenging security situation, opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have called on the Bola Tinubu administration to address the issue promptly.

However, the Presidency remains steadfast in asserting that President Bola Tinubu is effectively managing the situation.

Additionally, the Senate has adjourned plenary until February 6, allowing lawmakers to participate in the upcoming by-elections. The move reflects a collective effort to prioritize national security concerns and actively engage in finding solutions.
