A Nigerian student’s journey from Lagos to London aboard Egypt Air took a tragic turn when she reportedly fell ill mid-flight and later passed away at a hospital in Cairo. The family of the deceased, identified as Meshioye Remilekun Toyosi, is seeking answers and assistance in repatriating her remains to Nigeria.
The unfortunate journey began on Monday when Meshioye departed from Lagos with the hope of reaching London. Her elder sister, Mrs. Olufunmilola Olaniyi-Alabi, expressed frustration over their attempts to contact Egypt Air for information, as their calls went unanswered. Eventually, they discovered that she did not board the plane from Cairo to Heathrow.
It was later revealed that Meshioye fell ill on the flight, and upon landing in Cairo, she was rushed to a local hospital where she later passed away. Efforts to obtain detailed information about the circumstances of her death were met with challenges.
The Nigerian embassy and consulate were informed of her passing, but the airline did not provide much information to the family.
Meshioye’s family believes that Egypt Air should have been more proactive in contacting the passenger’s next of kin and providing information about the incident. They are demanding the return of her body to Nigeria, at the airline’s expense, along with all her belongings that were in their possession.
An anonymous source from Egypt Air confirmed that the deceased was indeed on the flight and was taken to a hospital in Cairo after falling ill. The airline informed the Nigerian Consulate in Cairo about the situation and is working on repatriating her body to Nigeria.
The family expressed distress over the lack of communication from the airline and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Meshioye’s death. They have also sought assistance from Nigerian authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to facilitate the repatriation process.
Efforts to reach the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for a response had not been successful at the time of this report Punch says.
