Chief of Army Staff Mourns First Female Major General, Maj-Gen. Aderonke Kale

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Maj-Gen. Aderonke Kale (retd.). Kale, the first female officer to attain the rank of Major General in the Nigerian Army and West Africa, as well as the first woman to lead a military hospital in Nigeria, passed away on November 8, 2023.

In an official statement on Saturday, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, conveyed the military’s profound sense of loss. Nwachukwu highlighted Kale’s dedicated service, unwavering commitment, and unquestionable loyalty throughout her military career.

The statement read, “The Chief of Army Staff while expressing his commiserations on behalf of Officers, Soldiers, and Civilian staff of the Nigerian Army, to the family, relations, and friends of the deceased Senior Officer, described her demise as a great loss to the Nigerian Army and the military community as a whole.”

Maj-Gen. Aderonke Kale’s contributions were not only significant in breaking gender barriers but also in reshaping the role of women in the Nigerian military.

The statement acknowledged her indelible legacy in the hearts of those who served alongside her and the broader military community. Her passing marks the end of an era and a solemn moment for the Nigerian Army.
