Parents of the recently freed students from Obafemi Awolowo University are demanding immediate action from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
They insist on the prompt removal of their children’s names, biometrics, and pictures from the EFCC records, following the release of 58 students on November 1, 2023.
A group known as the Parents’ Coalition against the Invasion of OAU Students’ Hostels by the EFCC conveyed their demands during a press conference in Gbagada, Lagos State.
They expressed their commitment to defending their children’s rights and called for an apology from the anti-graft agency for what they perceive as an unlawful clampdown on their wards.
Yinka Junaid, the spokesperson for the coalition, emphasized the importance of protecting their children’s futures.
He outlined the group’s expectations, calling for the public announcement of the removal of their children’s names, accompanied by a formal apology. Junaid insisted that this information should be widely disseminated through leading national newspapers and across all EFCC social media platforms.
Furthermore, the parents urged the EFCC to conclude investigations promptly, particularly for students whose devices, including academic tools, are still under the agency’s possession.
They demanded the unconditional release and clearance of students for whom nothing incriminating has been found.
This includes expunging their names, pictures, identities, and biometrics from all EFCC records and social media platforms.
The parents also called on the judiciary to ensure due diligence in the arraignment process for the 11 students involved in the incident.
The multifaceted demands reflect the parents’ strong stance on safeguarding their children’s rights and seeking redress for what they perceive as unjust actions by the EFCC.
