Lagos Government Intensifies Crackdown on Street Traders
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

The Lagos State Government has taken decisive action against street traders, dislodging and arresting individuals deemed “recalcitrant” in various areas.

The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, in a statement, identified the targeted zones, including Agege Motor Road, Kola, AIT Road, Command Gate, Ayobo Road, Egbeda, Igando, Ijegun, Jakande Gate, Okota, and Cele, among others.

Operatives from both the Kick Against Indiscipline and Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps executed the operation on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This move aligns with the state government’s recent efforts to combat street trading, which has included demolishing shanties and removing roadside traders.

Kunle Adeshina, the Director of Public Affairs in the ministry, revealed that arrests were made during the operation, and those apprehended were transported to the LAGESC/KAI headquarters in Oshodi for further action.

The crackdown is not confined to specific areas, as a broader enforcement drive earlier dislodged street traders hindering traffic flow at various locations such as Agege Motor Road, Mushin, Ojuelegba, Yaba, Oyingbo, Outer Marina, CMS, Awolowo Way Falomo, Kingsway Road, Admiralty Way in Lekki, and Victoria Island.

Adeshina emphasized that these actions are in line with standing directives and post-festive season strategies.

The arrested street hawkers have had their items seized, and they will undergo further procedures at the Oshodi headquarters.

This operation underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining order and ensuring the free flow of traffic in key areas.

As street trading remains a concern, these efforts aim to address recalcitrant traders and reinforce the importance of compliance with regulations.
